Answer: It depends on what disc brand you are using and your hardware. If it's name-brand stuff, then the data will probably be safe for years if burned properly and stored appropriately. Overall, I would recommend to burn slower and to check for read errors after you burn. You can either do this through your burning program or with some you can find online. Of all the DVD media that is around, Taiyo Yuden is the best.
