Question: MY LOCAL VON'S SUPERMARKET HAS A BIN FOR RECYCLING PLASTIC SHOPPING BAGS. CAN I PUT USED ZIPLOCK BAGS IN THERE AS WELL? I HATE THROWING THEM AWAY - SEEMS LIKE A WASTE.
Answer: Be sure and check where the plastic bags go. Currently, California has no plastic bag recycling. The bags have to be shipped to another state for recycling. This means trucks, gas, exhaust etc. Joe Garbarino, Marin County Recycling owner, says he has nowhere to take the bags. It may be that the stores say 'recycling' but they actually throw them in the dumpster.
